4 times more expensive than normal: London Heathrow Airport uses sustainable jet fuel for the first time

Britain’s Heathrow Airport has decided to use sustainable fuel for aircraft for the first time as part of a test ahead of the G7 summit next week.

This fuel is produced by the Finnish company “Neste” and supplied by the “Vitol” oil trading company, and it is made entirely from sustainable wastes such as cooking oil and animal fats, according to a joint statement issued by the airport and the two companies today, Thursday.

The statement said that this fuel reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% compared to regular jet fuel.

Delivery of the new fuel began on Thursday and will be integrated into the airport’s main fuel supply. The total volume of this fuel to be used will be equivalent to ten short flights.

In a fact sheet dated last April, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) said that sustainable fuel has been used on 350,000 flights so far and is two to four times more expensive than regular fuel.
