His Dark Materials’ Nina Sosanya and Game of Thrones actor Ron Donachie are set to star in Channel 4’s new drama, Screw.

From Killing Eve writer Rob Williams, whose own experiences working in prisons acts as inspiration for the show, the six-part series is set to explore life behind bars as you’ve never seen it before.

It promises to deliver an “uncensored, shocking and often darkly funny” look at what it’s like to be a female warden in an all-male jail.

Sosanya will take on the central role of Leigh, an officer who worries about how her secrets could jeopardise her job as a guard if they were to get out, while Donachie plays Don, a fellow ‘screw’.

Derry Girls’ Jamie-Lee O’Donnell (who plays a young trainee officer named Rose), Detectorists’ Laura Checkley, Line of Duty’s Faraz Ayub and I May Destroy You’s Stephen Wright also feature.

“Screw offers the audience an insight in to the challenges and struggles faced by both prisoners and officers; told with humour, humanity and hope,” Caroline Hollick, Channel 4 Head of Drama, said in a statement.

“I’m so excited for our brilliant, distinctive cast, led by the superlative Nina Sosanya, and I hope Jamie-Lee O’Donnell’s dramatic new role will her see fast becoming an iconic face of Channel 4.”

Sarah Brown, STV Studios’ Creative Director of Drama, added: “We are incredibly excited about the extraordinary group of actors we’ve assembled for Screw. Rob Williams’s compelling, hilarious and thought-provoking scripts couldn’t be in better hands.

“We can’t wait to see audiences falling in love with our brilliant prison officer ‘family’.”
