Turkish parliamentarian: Erdogan’s decision to withdraw from the “Istanbul Agreement” is null and we will face it legally

The Turkish parliamentarian for the opposition Republican People’s Party, Gandan Yoghir, said that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s decision to withdraw from the Istanbul Agreement on Violence Against Women is “null and we intend to confront it.”

Yogh R., who is also a member of the Parliamentary Equal Opportunities between Women and Men Committee in Turkey, added, in a statement to “Sputnik”, that “the Istanbul Agreement is still valid in terms of legal and implementation, and Erdogan and the government’s decision to withdraw from it is wrong and null.”

Regarding the steps that her party will take to confront the government’s decision to cancel the agreement, the parliamentarian said: “This issue has a legal dimension as well as it has a social and practical dimension, and our party will carry out various activities in this regard, and we will continue our legal work until the end and we will not allow usurping the people’s will and the legislative authority of Parliament.

And she continued: “The Istanbul Agreement is considered a law and a right acquired as a result of a long struggle, and it must be evaluated in the framework of human rights and fundamental freedoms. The agreement cannot be canceled by the signature of a person and his decision, and the People’s Party cannot accept this and will continue its struggle to implement it.”

She added: “We have faced problems in implementing the agreement since it was signed in 2011, when the Turkish government placed obstacles to its implementation, ignored them and did not comply with them, and launched a black propaganda campaign against it during the past three years and tried to create a perception that this agreement increases the cases of divorce in society and spoils life.” Marital, family and cause change in people’s sexual orientations. ”

Regarding the political dimension of the decision taken by the Turkish government, parliamentarian Yoghad R. said: “We affirm from the beginning that the murders committed against women have a political dimension, and the presidential decree to withdraw from the Istanbul Agreement is a document proving this, because this decision was taken in response to the black cries of religious groups and groups to obtain To support them in order to continue in power. ”

And she continued, “The political authority in Turkey took this decision, ignoring the right to life and rights of women, indifferent to their exposure to murders and violence, and proved that their decision is purely political.”
On Saturday, Turkey withdrew from the “Istanbul Convention” against domestic violence against women, according to a decree issued by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The ruling “Justice and Development” party in Turkey believes that the agreement threatens the structure of the Turkish family and society.
