WhatsApp is proceeding with a controversial update, despite the criticism

Facebook’s WhatsApp said on Thursday it would go ahead with a controversial update to its privacy policy, but would allow users to read it “at a leisurely” pace and would also display a notification providing additional information.

The messaging app had informed users in January that it was preparing a new privacy policy, under which it might share user data with Facebook and its affiliates.

This sparked global criticism and pushed users to migrate to competing applications, including Signal and Telegram, which made WhatsApp delay implementing the new policy until May and clarifies that the update focuses on allowing users to correspond with commercial companies and will not affect personal conversations.

WhatsApp said in its latest post that it will start reminding users to review and agree to updates to continue using the platform.

“We have attached more information to try to address the concerns we are hearing,” he added.
