Madinah is brimming with historical mosques and landmarks. Among these gems stands Al-Ghamamah Mosque, where it is believed that Prophet Muhammad offered Eid prayers and performed the funeral prayer in absentia for the Negus of Ethiopia upon hearing news of his passing, according to the Saudi Press Agency.

Located roughly 500 meters southwest of the Bab Al-Salam gate of the Prophet’s Mosque, Al-Ghamamah was the first mosque constructed by Caliph Umar bin Abdulaziz during his reign in Madinah.

The mosque boasts a captivating architectural style: Its exterior features black basalt stones, ornately carved wooden doors, and white domes, and a minaret graces the northwest corner. The mosque’s paved plaza — adorned with trees and greenery — provides a tranquil haven for visitors. Inside, the southern wall houses a mihrab, flanked on the right by a marble pulpit.

Al-Ghamamah Mosque has undergone numerous restorations throughout its history and the current Saudi government has continued this tradition, overseeing significant renovations during the reign of King Salman. This dedication from the Kingdom’s leaders has ensured the mosque remains a vibrant center for religious and cultural activities, solidifying its connection to the Prophet’s legacy.
