With the end of Outlander on the horizon—season seven will premiere this summer, and an eighth and final season has already wrapped—Sam Heughan is moving on to a new TV show: The Couple Next Door. The show, based on Dutch drama New Neighbors, is described as a “psychological drama, exploring the stultifying claustrophobia of suburbia and the fallout of chasing your darkest desires.”
The psychological thriller will follow Evie (Eleanor Tomlinson) and Pete (Alfred Enoch), a couple who move into an upscale neighborhood. They befriend their neighbors, “alpha traffic cop” Danny (Heughan) and yoga instructor Becka (Jessica De Couw), but after Danny and Evie have a passionate night together, things go awry.
“I’m thrilled to be working with Eagle Eye Drama and director Dries Vos again and adding a third series with my Starz family,” Heughan said in a statement. “Dries has a unique visual flair and I’m sure we’re going to make something special.”
Tomlinson said, “Evie is an exciting challenge for me – a girl whose world is turned upside down as she navigates devastating trauma, which isn’t helped by unresolved issues from her past. We have an excellent team on board, and I am looking forward to exploring this dark and complicated world alongside Sam and our director Dries.”
Filming has already begun in Leeds and Belgium, and there will be six episodes in the series. In the UK, the show will air on Channel 4, and in the U.S., it will stream on Starz. No premiere date has been set yet.
