Investigators in Greece are hearing eight new suspects from Pakistan in the case of a terrorist network suspected of planning attacks against Jewish targets in the capital, Athens, a police source told AFP Thursday.

“The investigation to see if there are other people involved is still going on,” the source said.

The eight suspects had been previously arrested for staying illegally in Greece, according to the Greek News Agency, and they are in “close contact” with two men who were arrested on Tuesday during the authorities’ first campaign in this case.

It is suspected that the two Pakistanis, aged 27 and 29, originally from Iran, were planning an attack on a Jewish community building frequented by Israelis, in the center of Athens, which includes a synagogue and a Jewish food restaurant.

Greek police spokeswoman Constantina Demogledou told AFP on Tuesday that the “mastermind” of the operation appeared to be “a Pakistani living outside Europe.”

Another police source, who requested anonymity, said he was residing in Iran.
Israel accused Tehran of being behind the network and said its intelligence service, the Mossad, helped avert an attack. On Wednesday, Iran’s embassy in Greece denied any connection to the case.

With the Jewish holiday of Passover approaching in early April, Greece was included in the list of countries subject to travel directives issued by the Israeli National Security Council.
