Nine soldiers were killed when two US army helicopters crashed in the United States on Wednesday evening, a spokesman announced Thursday.

The two Black Hawk helicopters belonging to the 101st Airborne Division crashed around 22:00 local time (3:00 GMT) during a routine training mission in Kentucky.

“Nine soldiers were killed during the incident,” Lieutenant Colonel Anthony Hoeffler said.

The two HH-60 Black Hawks, which can each carry up to 11 people, crashed in Trigg, northwest of Fort Campbell, home to the 101st Airborne Division’s headquarters.

The army announced earlier in a statement that “the command is currently focusing its attention on the soldiers and their families.”
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear will head Thursday morning to Fort Campbell “to support our troops and their families after the tragic incident that occurred last night.”

A US Army training plane crashed in September 2021 in Texas, forcing its two pilots to throw themselves out of it.
