A very rare pink diamond to be auctioned in New York

Sotheby’s announced Wednesday that a “very rare” pink diamond will be auctioned in New York in November, with an estimated price of $35 million.

This precious stone, which weighs just under 11 carats and was extracted in 2019 from a mine in Botswana and weighed a total of 23.78 carats at the time, will be sold on June 8 in New York.

Sotheby’s said that the auction of this diamond, called “Eternal Pink”, which has an estimated price of $35 million, will be held during a week dedicated to jewelry sales.

“We are dealing with the rarest of all rare diamonds, with a stone like no other,” Sotheby’s head of jewelry sales Alexander Ibelin told AFP.

He added, “The value of one carat of the diamond was estimated at $ 3.3 million, and its estimated price is therefore a little more than $ 35 million, the highest estimated value of one carat of any gemstone that has been put on the market.”

In the thriving auction market in New York, Sotheby’s, Christie’s and Phillips offer pieces from different fields other than paintings and sculptures, including jewelry, clothing and collectibles of stars of art, literature and sports.

And Sotheby’s indicated that the pink diamond, which investors are so eager to buy, is “much rarer than a painting by the Belgian surrealist painter Rene Magritte or a painting by the American painter Andy Warhol,” because of its purity and quality.

The world record for a pink diamond was set in 2017, when a stone was sold in Hong Kong for $71.2 million. And in 2022, the pink “Williamson Pink Star” diamond was also sold in Hong Kong for $ 57.7 million.
