The intelligence service raised the terrorist threat level in Northern Ireland from “important” to “serious”, the British government said Tuesday, ahead of a scheduled visit by US President Joe Biden to mark the 25th anniversary of the peace deal.
The British government said that MI5 was the one that decided to raise the bar, stressing the recent “increased terrorist activity”.
And last week a police officer was seriously wounded in Northern Ireland in an attack that was unanimously condemned by all political leaders.
The local police, who opened an investigation into attempted murder, said the policeman, who was not on duty, was taken to hospital and was in a “critical but stable” condition on Wednesday evening.
