China executes a man who burned his wife in a live broadcast

A Chinese court in southwest China’s Sichuan Province on Saturday executed a man convicted of murder for setting his ex-wife on fire, in a case that has sparked outrage and terror over domestic violence cases.

In a short statement released online Saturday morning, the Ngawa Tibetan and Chiang People’s Court said it carried out Tang Luo’s death sentence.

Tang set his ex-wife on fire in September 2020 while she was broadcasting live on the short video platform Doyen, and the 30-year-old woman, known online as Lamu, died of her injuries a few weeks later.
Lamu’s sister had told The Paper, a Shanghai-based official media outlet, that her sister had suffered domestic abuse at the hands of Tang for years and decided to divorce him as a result.

The case has sparked widespread condemnation and anger across the country over the plight that women can face due to the domestic violence they may be subjected to.

Police detained the man a few days after news of the attack spread, and Tang appealed the decision but lost the appeal in January of this year, the Associated Press reported.
