Russian women over the age of 40 have the largest number of children in 2021 since the 1990s

According to data from the State Statistics Committee, Russian women aged 40 and over gave birth to 56,861 children in 2021, the largest number since the 1990s.

Official statistics indicate that 1.39 million children were born in 2021. Women at the age of 31 gave birth to 88,420 of them, and women at the age of 26-34 gave birth to 739,350 children. Women aged 40 and over gave birth to 56,861 children, of whom 21,427 were born by women at the age of 40. This number of births in 2021 is the highest since 1990, when women at the age of 40 gave birth to 20,909 children.

According to official statistics, 495,000 first children, 501.4 thousand second children, 263.2 third children, 85.4 fourth children, and 47.9 fifth children and more were born in 2021. Women over the age of 40 gave birth to 16.5 second children and 16.9 thousand third children in their lives.

The information office of the Russian Ministry of Labor indicates that thanks to the measures taken, a steady trend has emerged for the birth of the third child and more, as their number has increased by a third during the past 8 years.

Age after 35-40 years is considered the traditional time for having a third child and beyond. And that women in the age group of 40-49 years are the largest age group and continues to increase. In connection with this, the birth rate will also increase.
