Researchers have discovered a new species of water lily for the first time in more than a century, at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew, London.
The new lily, named “Victoria Boliviana”, is native to Bolivia, and has leaves that extend 3 meters, or nearly 10 feet, making it the largest water lily in the world, according to a research paper published in the journal Frontiers in Plant Science on Monday.
The newly discovered water lily was previously believed to be ‘Victoria amazonica’, which was named after Queen Victoria in 1837.

Scientists at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew studied the species’ DNA, and discovered genetic differences between “Victoria Boliviana”, “Victoria Amazonica” and “Victoria Cruziana”.
The authors of the paper chose the name “Victoria Boliviana” for the world’s largest water lily “in honor of the Bolivian partners, and the lily’s home in South America, where it grows in the aquatic ecological conditions of Llanos de moxos.”
