With his bizarre hairstyle and tongue hanging permanently from his blush, Happy Face was named “the ugliest dog in the world” after a competition in Petaluma, California.
The 17-year-old, a Chinese crested dog, beat nine other competing dogs on Friday in the annual competition that has been held for decades.
The winning dog was adopted last year during the COVID-19 pandemic by 41-year-old Arizona musician Jenida Biennale.
Biennale said she was told at the kennel that the animal she was adopting was elderly and had health problems.
“The kennel staff tried to prepare me for what I was about to see,” the dog owner said proudly. “I saw a really old creature, who needed a second chance and deserved to be loved.”
Vets had warned that due to health issues, the dog might not live for more than a few extra weeks.
“The mother’s love, kindness and kisses helped him” overcome these problems, AFP quoted Biennale as saying.
“His hobbies include sleeping, snoring and whining while he’s sleeping, and making strange noises when he’s happy,” she explained.
“This world-famous event celebrates the imperfections that make all dogs special and unique,” the organizers said.
