During the past few hours, Egypt was overwhelmed with joy, after the success of a popular campaign in which the stars of society participated to raise more than two million US dollars for the treatment of the girl Rokia, who suffers from spinal degeneration.
The girl, Ruqayya, one year and 11 months old, urgently needs treatment for a disease that leads to complete paralysis or death if the injection is not taken before she reaches two years of age. It is Spinal Muscular Atrophy, known in Arabic as Spinal Muscular Atrophy.
And yesterday, Friday, the Egyptians were able to collect 40 million pounds, equivalent to two million and 125 thousand dollars, as a price for one injection of the most expensive Zolgensma vaccine in the world.
A group of young men and women urged the public on the communication sites to donate, even if a few pounds for a paper treatment, and businessmen, athletes and artists joined the campaign, and thousands of people responded to the call, to the extent that they raised 10 million pounds with them in the first 3 days.
The incident aroused the sympathy of many on social media, and what fueled the desire to donate more, is the cancellation of the students of the fourth year at the Faculty of Commerce at Cairo University, for their graduation ceremony and donating its financial value to an account that was opened and supervised by the Ministry of Social Solidarity, by making available an immediate “code” number 92181 for anyone to donate. Shop from any store or supermarket.
Last Thursday, the amount amounted to 32 million and 500 thousand pounds, according to the girl’s mother in a television interview.
Hours after that interview, Ruqayya’s parents learned that the required amount of the injection, which the girl should receive about a week before she turns two years old, had been completed.

In the case of Ruqayya, she must receive treatment on July 5 or 6, because she was born on July 13.
In this context, the father of the girl, Roqaya, revealed to Egyptian media that more than the required amount was collected, saying: “We collected 45 million pounds, that is, 5 million pounds more than the required amount.”
He stressed that the additional amounts will be redirected to support other cases such as Roqaya.
