A person trying to get into an elementary school in Alabama where a summer program is being held was shot and killed by a police officer Thursday morning, authorities said.
Gadsden City School Principal Tony Riddick told WBMA television that a man went through several doors trying to get into Walnut Park Elementary School, where the city’s summer programs for children are taking place, and when the principal saw what was happening, he decided to close the school. .
Jonathan Horton, a police officer for Etowah County, told the Gadsden Times: “A police officer from nearby Rainbow, who was a school resource officer, confronted this person and got into a fight with him, asking for support, as other officers responded and the person was shot.” .
Officials stated that no students were injured, and that all the children were exited from the building. Authorities did not immediately release the identity of the dead person or any details about the altercation, but Horton said the officer sustained minor injuries.
The incident came in light of a state of security alert inside and around schools in the United States, following a series of mass killings that occurred recently, one of which killed 21 people, most of them children, inside a school in Texas.
