Opening of a famous prehistoric cave exhibition in Marseille

A permanent virtual exhibition is set to open at one of France’s most famous prehistoric sites, the undersea “Cave of Cosierre”, where fears are growing that it will be completely submerged by high tide.

From Saturday, visitors to the French coastal city of Marseille will be able to see the Cosser Mediterranee, a replica of the 30,000-year-old site.

The visual and audio experience includes copies of the prehistoric paintings that made the cave world famous.

The “Cave of Cosier” was discovered by diver Henri Cosier in 1985 in the deep waters off the coast of Marseille.

After years of preparation, the exhibition provides an opportunity to discover the cave, of which only 20 percent is still dry and currently accessible.

Officials say the dry areas remaining in the cave are at risk of inundation due to the effects of climate change.
