A video showing a woman climbing the wall of a well she has descended to reach water has shed light on the acute water shortage experienced by many areas in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.
In the video, which has spread widely on social media in India, the woman is shown descending into the well without a rope or kit in order to reach the water.

People in the village of Gosiya were forced to take such difficult measures after the water in the wells and ponds dried up, with many other areas across India facing a similar water crisis.

Videos showing Indians risking their lives to reach water often go viral on social media.
Many Indians interacted on social media with what they described as the “heartbreaking” video and called on officials to extend an urgent helping hand to the village.
