Today, Friday, a Hebrew newspaper revealed a heated discussion that took place between former US President Ronald Reagan and former Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin, regarding the Palestinian refugee file.
The Hebrew newspaper, Ha’aretz, reported this Friday morning that immediately after the outbreak of the first Israeli war on Lebanon in 1982, Begin visited Washington, DC, and met with Reagan, and a heated dialogue took place between them, during which he raised the issue of deporting Palestinian refugees to other countries.
The newspaper confirmed that the Reagan administration recognized, at the time, Israel’s right to act against the Palestine Liberation Organization, which was stationed in Lebanon at this time, especially after it left Jordan in the seventies of the last century.
The newspaper indicated on its website that President Ronald Reagan proposed integrating Palestinian refugees in Lebanon to become Lebanese citizens, while Begin commented that Lebanon is a small Arab country, proposing to deport them to other Arab countries, such as Libya, Syria and Iraq.
Begin’s proposal came to transfer Palestinian refugees to Libya, as it is a large country in geographical size and is supportive of the Palestine Liberation Organization, while Iraq is characterized by its huge resources and large reserves of oil.
The newspaper pointed out that this session was held on June 21, 1982, at the White House, just two weeks after the outbreak of the first Israeli war on Lebanon.
