An Algerian young man discovered a knife stuck in his back in 1996, without him or the doctors paying attention to the “foreign body” throughout his years of suffering.

Young Fares from the state of Setif in northeastern Algeria continues his life with a knife stuck in his back for 26 years, after he was stabbed in 1996.

A report by the Algerian newspaper “Al-Shorouk” indicated that the young man underwent an operation after being stabbed, after which the doctor closed the wound, leaving the knife in his body.

The young Fares continued to take painkillers over the past years with the intensification of his pain, until he was recently discovered after he visited a doctor in Setif and took an x-ray, to find a foreign body in his back.

And the doctor believed, according to the Algerian newspaper, that there was a defect in the imaging device, which made him ask the patient to take a picture in another clinic.

The surprise was for the patient and the doctor, as they confirmed with conclusive evidence that the front part of a knife was in his back.

The patient visited a number of doctors in Algerian hospitals, where they unanimously agreed on the danger of surgical intervention to remove the knife, given its proximity to the spinal cord.

However, Fares, according to Al-Shorouk, met a doctor at Mustafa Pasha Hospital in the capital, and agreed to perform a surgical operation for him soon, after completing a number of medical tests.

The newspaper quoted the young man, as saying that he did not think of having a knife in his back despite the pain he was experiencing, noting that he did not remember who performed the first operation for him to cover the wound that was in Ain Walman Hospital, to file a complaint related to a serious medical error.
