Last Wednesday evening, the Chinese Zhurong rover was hit by a severe dust storm on the surface of Mars.
And the China National Space Administration said today, Friday, that the Zhurong rover has gone into sleep mode, awaiting the end of the dust storm, according to Xinhua.
The latest images taken by the cameras on board the Chinese Mars orbiter “Tianun-1” revealed the presence of a dust storm passing over the Zhurong spacecraft’s patrol area.
Comparing the images with images taken over the past two months, and by analyzing the recent energy data of the rover’s solar wings, they discovered that the Chorong rover is now grappling with a severe dust storm on Mars.
The Space Administration explained that the Chorong Patrol area has entered the winter season, during which daytime temperatures are expected to drop to less than minus 20 degrees Celsius, and temperatures at night will drop to minus 100 degrees Celsius.
She added that during mid-July, temperatures drop more, so the vehicle went into sleep mode, on Wednesday, in order to deal with the challenges of the dust storm and low temperatures.
