Lucy Boynton has finally opened up about how she felt listening to her boyfriend Rami Malek pay tribute to her during his 2019 Oscar acceptance speech.

In a new interview with You magazine the 28-year-old recalled the moment the actor, who won the Best Actor gong that year for his portray of Freddie Mercury in the biopic Bohemian Rhapsody about his life, expressed his devotion for her.

Boynton, who played Mercury’s best friend Mary Austin in the film, met and Malek met on the set of the film, and the pair have been dating ever since.

During his speech, Malek noted: ‘Lucy Boynton, you are the heart of this film, you are beyond immensely talented, you have captured my heart. Thank you so much.’

Boynton told the publication that she wasn’t aware of how public his declaration of love was at the time.

‘It sounds so silly but I was really unaware of the public element of that,’ she said. ‘You’re just absorbing, millisecond by millisecond, what is happening, and then suddenly you hear the applause and you realise it’s been a public moment, which is slightly strange.’

Rumours began circulating in April 2018 that Malek and Boyton were an item, but in January 2019 Malek hinted the pair were dating during his acceptance speech at the Breakthrough Performance Award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival,

‘Thank you, Lucy Boynton. You have been my ally, my confidant, my love. Thank you so much,’ he added.

In recent years, while the pair have remained relatively private about their romance and been spotted walking the red carpet together at numerous events such as the Met Gala and Golden Globes, they’ve occasionally spoken of their respect for each other.

Thanking Malek for helping her find her confidence on the set of Bohemian Rhapsody, The Politician star previously told the Cut: ‘On that set, I neglected my book much more than I usually would and got much more involved, and I want to do that going forward.

‘That was one thing that I learned from Rami. I was always just trying to keep out of everyone’s way, and I’ve realised maybe that’s not the best.’
