Consumers using a popular hair care product, via social media, expressed their concern after circulating a substance in which the European Union warned, and indicated that it might cause fertility problems.
Olaplex uses a small amount of a synthetic fragrance called Lilyal in its best-selling product, Hair Perfector No. 3, and the European Union has officially warned that exposure to it over time may pose a health risk, especially for those who want to. in procreation.

In a review, the European Union described the substance “Lilyal” as “toxic to reproduction,” noting that it may be harmful to fertility and fetal development, and announced that it would give it an opportunity for cosmetic companies to get rid of the substance from September 2021 until this March. as a deadline.
In response to these concerns, Olaplex announced in a statement through its account on the “Instagram” website that it had stopped selling all of its products that contain “Lilyal” in January 2022.
But the company stressed at the same time in its statement that “the manner in which this ingredient has been used as a fragrance is non-functional and inactive, and must not cause sterility, miscarriage or disturbances in the development of the fetus,” it says.

Although Olaplex is the only brand that has publicly addressed the phase-out of Lilyal, there are several other brands that have used this additive in their skincare products.
The substance was found to be commonly found in more than 1,200 products, such as shampoos, conditioners and other hair care products, as well as perfumes, lotions and body washes, according to research findings on the Environmental Working Group’s “Skin Deep” website.
The ‘lily’ component is found naturally in chamomile essential oil, and it can be extracted or made in a laboratory for use in its distinctive lily-of-the-valley scent, usually in very small doses.
