Third body found on stricken Italian ferry

The Greek coast guard said Thursday that a third body was found on the Italian ferry that caught fire last week, and the search is still underway for eight missing persons.

A fire broke out on the Euro Ferry Olympia at dawn Friday near the Greek island of Corfu after leaving the Greek port of Igoumenitsa towards the Italian city of Brindisi.

Most of the passengers were quickly evacuated within an hour, but a number of truck drivers were still missing. On Sunday, firefighters found the body of a 58-year-old Greek truck driver.

On Wednesday evening, a second body was found in the ferry’s garage, after the ship was towed to the port of Astakos on Greece’s western coast to allow rescue operations to continue in a safer manner. The identity of the two victims has not been established.

Three truck drivers, a Belarusian, a Bulgarian and a Romanian, at Corfu Hospital are still suffering from breathing difficulties after being rescued from the stricken ferry.

Of the 281 survivors, 230 passengers and 51 crew members, two Afghans were not on the passenger list, raising fears that there may be more unregistered passengers on the ferry.
