A photographer’s encounter with a 3.5-metre great white shark in South Australia ended with him winning the ‘Best British Underwater Photographer of the Year 2022’ award.
Photographer Matty Smith posted a picture of him confronting the shark on his Instagram account, to the admiration of many of his followers.
And about the scenes of taking the winning photo, Smith indicated to CNN that he took it using the “Over Under Photography” technology, which allows taking a picture half of it above the surface of the water and half of it under the water.

In order to protect himself from any sudden attack from the shark while approaching it, he designed a special column of carbon and aluminum that helped him to install his camera in order to put it in the water, and it was operated by a remote operator.
Photographer Matty Smith confirmed that what helped him to take the picture is that the shark was completely calm, and was showing a curious and non-aggressive behavior, unlike other sharks that were present in the place, and show a little aggressive behavior.
He also pointed out that the shark’s behavior encouraged his desire to present a different idea to the frightening shark, which made most people think that the picture looked cute in a funny way, which is a difficult task for the great white shark,” he said.
Photographer Matty Smith described the great white shark as a “lovable villain”.
