Ukraine proposes holding a summit with the participation of the “five” of the Security Council, Kiev, Berlin and Ankara to discuss de-escalation in Donbass
Today, Monday, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba suggested discussing ways to stop the escalation over Ukraine, with the participation of the “five” of the UN Security Council, Kiev, Berlin and Ankara.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry quoted Kuleba as saying in Brussels: “In our opinion, the best formula for holding a discussion on de-escalation and developing new security guarantees is to hold a summit in a format that includes the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, Ukraine, Germany and Turkey.”
In recent days, diplomatic efforts have been continuing to settle the crisis around Ukraine, where the southeastern Donbass region is witnessing a sharp security escalation, amid the exchange of Kiev and the leaders of the (unilaterally declared) Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics of accusations of violating the armistice on the line of contact between the two parties to the armed conflict.
The worsening security situation in the region coincided with senior Western officials continuing to talk about an alleged Russian planning to “invade Ukraine”, despite Moscow repeatedly denying this and announcing the start of the withdrawal of its forces from the border with Ukraine, after the end of military exercises.
