Study: Walking an extra 10 minutes a day could add years to your life

A new scientific study has found that walking for an extra 10 minutes each day can extend your life.
The study of 5,000 middle-aged and older Americans found that the risk of dying from any cause decreases with increased levels of exercise.
The authors of the study published in the scientific journal “Jama” confirmed that just an additional 10 minutes of moderate activity per day, such as brisk walking, contributed to reducing deaths between 40 to 85 years by 7 percent annually.

Researchers also estimate that a small lifestyle change (a 10-minute walk) could save 100,000 lives in America at an annual rate.
The researchers examined the health records and death rates of 4,840 participants between the ages of 40 and 85, collected from a national database, to see if small increases in their activity level prevented deaths.
They measured “moderate” to “vigorous” physical activity based on data collected from volunteers, who wore “accelerometers” for a week, a device that measures how active they are.
The study estimates that increasing physical activity by 10 minutes a day will prevent 11,174 deaths among the American population annually (6.9 percent).
They added that an increase of 20 minutes of walking may contribute to a decrease in the number of deaths in the country by 209,459 cases per year (13 percent), while an increase of 30 minutes of walking could lead to a decrease of 272,297 (16.9 percent).
The study also claims that men will benefit more from increased exercise, explaining that an additional 10 minutes of walking per day reduces 8 percent of total deaths, while deaths among women will decrease by 5.9 percent.
