Two public sector workers in the US state of Maine have rescued a man after they saw him jogging with his severed arm on the road, authorities said.

“It was divine intervention because two of my colleagues were working on the sidewalks,” said Mary Ann Brinchek, director of public works for Lewiston.

The sun journal reported that eyewitnesses said the man’s arm was severed near his shoulder in an apparent accident at the workplace last Friday.

Public works crew members applied first aid while waiting for the ambulance to arrive, Lewiston Police Lt. Derek St. Laurent said.

Investigators traced a trail of blood back to a shop, where several people said the man, described as a young man, ran a sawmill.

Officials said the injured man, whose name has not been released, was taken to hospital and is expected to survive. It was not clear if surgeons would be able to reattach his arm.
