Residents of an Irish city have witnessed a shocking and disturbing incident, after two fraudsters brought the body of a man to a post office to collect his pension.
Two men brought the body to a post office in Carlow, Ireland, in an attempt to collect his pension, according to Irish media reports.
Irish police force Gardy launched an investigation, after post office workers became suspicious and contacted authorities last Friday.
No money was given to the men inside the post office, who are believed to have known the deceased personally, according to the Irish Independent.
In the details of the incident, a man first came to the post office alone to collect the pension, and the staff told him that the recipient of the pension should be present, according to the Irish Times.
Then the man left and returned shortly after with another man carrying the body. A woman who lives near the post office told The Independent that her daughter saw the men carrying the body into the building.
The woman, who asked not to be named, said her daughter had noticed that the man appeared to be ill as “his feet were dragging the ground”.
After others suspected the two men, they fled the scene, leaving the body behind.
The city’s local councilor, Fergal Brown, said the incident was “extremely shocking and disturbing to everyone at the local level”, especially for post office employees.
The deceased man added, “He was a very respectable, well-liked, very loved man who did not cause any offense to anyone.”
The dead man was identified as a local resident, and he was in his 60s, named Pedar Doyle, and was later pronounced dead, and his home was declared a crime scene.
