Sotheby’s auction house in Dubai unveiled a diamond it said may have come from outer space and bears the name “Enigma”, and that its price may exceed 6 million dollars.
Today, Monday, the rare gem was presented to reporters as part of a tour in Dubai and Los Angeles, before it will be auctioned next February in London.
The house expected that the price of the 555.55-carat black diamond would reach at least 5 million pounds ($6.8 million). The auction house intends to accept cryptocurrency as a potential payment method as well.
And the Associated Press quoted Sophie Stevens, a jewelry specialist at the house, that the number five holds great importance for the diamond, and explained that its design was inspired by the Middle Eastern symbol in the form of the palm of the hand (with its five fingers), which is a sign of strength and protection.
Stevens added that the black diamond was likely from outer space.
She explained: “In light of carbon diamonds, we believe that they were formed from extraterrestrial origins, with meteorites colliding with the Earth, or formed from the discharge of chemical vapor, or that they came from the meteorites themselves.”
It is noteworthy that black diamonds are extremely rare, and are found naturally only in Brazil and Central Africa.
