At least 12 people were killed and others injured in an earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale in eastern Afghanistan.

The news agency “AFP” quoted Mohamed Saleh Bardel, governor of the Cadiz region in the state of Badghis, that the victims were killed when the roofs of their homes fell on them.

Bardil added that “a number of people were injured in today’s earthquake,” and that women and children were among the victims.

The magnitude of the earthquake was 5.3, according to the US Geological Survey.

Earthquakes often strike northern Afghanistan, and tremors damage poorly painted buildings and homes in the impoverished country.
