Barrow in Furness, northwest England, has opened an unusual vacancy.
According to the British newspaper “Daily Mail”, the council is looking for a man to run the inn and hotel, watch over a castle built in the fourteenth century, and most importantly, be the king of Belle Island.
Everyone who gets the job will need to be “extremely dedicated,” says John Murphy, who has been leading the walking tours to the island for nearly 40 years.
“You can’t run for a job just to get a loaf of bread when you’re on Beale Island,” he added. “You’ll need dedication and a strong passion for solitude, peace and quiet. That takes a special character.”
Dominated by shipyards and nuclear submarines, Barrow, which is not often seen as a tourist destination, has changed nowadays and has become a favorite destination for many, Murphy noted.
After appointing the right person for the position, a ritual will be performed at the moment of his appointment, in which the future king sits on a wooden throne and puts on a helmet, after which several buckets of alcohol are poured over his head.
The governor’s duties include receiving tourists from April to September, when the ferry service is operating. In other periods, the king is alone.
Included in the island’s entertainment program are stunning sunsets, seal watching on sandy beaches and a sense of extraordinary attraction – by walking on the sand to the neighboring island at low tide.
