Russian court fines Google $100 million

In an unprecedented ruling, a Moscow court imposed a fine of more than 7.2 billion rubles (more than 98 million dollars) on the US company “Google” for the systematic failure to remove material banned in Russia.

The Tagansky District Court in Moscow confirmed today, Friday, that the ruling, which is the first of its kind in the history of Russia, imposes a fine, based on the company’s sales, to Google, amounting to more than seven billion and 221 million rubles.

And “TASS” agency previously quoted the Russian Federal Supervisory Authority in the field of communications and information technology “Roscomnadzor”, confirming that it had filed 16 lawsuits since the beginning of 2021 against “Google” in cases related to the non-deletion of materials prohibited in the country from the company’s Internet platforms.

With regard to judgments, they are issued based on the company’s sales, where the judiciary determines the size of the fine on this basis, and it may range from five to ten percent of the company’s annual sales.

TASS noted that Roscomnadzor also filed a similar complaint with the judiciary against the American company Facebook, and it will be considered today.
