Facebook has warned of widespread espionage operations that have affected more than 50,000 of its users and Instagram users around the world.
France 24 said that the espionage operations launched by 6 companies operating in the field of surveillance and reconnaissance killed 50,000 people in more than 100 countries.
Among the victims of the spying operations were journalists, dissidents, critics of authoritarian regimes, opposition families and human rights activists, said Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. The spies continued to monitor their targets for months through groups.
Facebook reported that it had banned more than 1,500 fake accounts, which the companies created to spy on users on Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.
The spying companies planned to spread their spies as fictitious characters on social media platforms, with the aim of chatting with their targets online, to get their email addresses, to launch more attacks.
