Today, Wednesday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed Ankara’s support for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

This came as part of a congratulatory message sent by Erdogan to his Palestinian counterpart Mahmoud Abbas, on the occasion of the thirty-third anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, according to the official Palestinian News Agency (WAFA).

In his telegram, the Turkish president referred to “the depth of the historical relations that unite the Palestinian and Turkish peoples.”

The Turkish president stressed his country’s support “for an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, and for ending the occupation.”

It is noteworthy that last Monday marked the 33rd anniversary of the late Palestinian President Yasser Arafat’s issuance of the “Independence Document”.

In the document, Arafat declared, “the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital,” which was not achieved on the ground.
