US investment app Robin Hood announced a security breach on November 3rd, exposing the data of up to 7 million users (a third of its user base).
The financial services company said in an official statement that the hackers seized the email addresses of 5 million people, and the full names of a different group of about two million customers.
They also managed to steal additional personal information of 310 users, including name, date of birth and zip code, while 10 of them had their accounts exposed to a more comprehensive disclosure of their details.
But Robin Hood confirmed that no Social Security numbers, bank account numbers or debit card numbers were disclosed in the hacking incident.
She announced that after she was able to stop the breach, the “hackers” demanded a payment of extortion, and that she informed law enforcement authorities, and that she was investigating the incident with the help of the security company “Mandiant”.
Robinhood is an online trading platform that allows its clients to trade in stocks and cryptocurrencies without commission.
More than 22 million users funded accounts in the “Robin Hood” application, while nearly 19 million actively used their accounts during the month of September.
