Mysterious “black hole” on Google Maps raises curiosity

The appearance of a “black hole” discovered in Google Maps has raised many questions, after it was first discovered by a Reddit user.

To start a flurry of discussion on Reddit about whether this “black hole” is in fact an island, a gateway to another world or a secret military base.

After searching in Google Maps, it was eventually found that it was an atoll belonging to the Republic of Kiribati, which is known as Vostok Island., according to what was published by the British newspaper, The Independent.

According to what was published by the businessinsider website, many have commented on this phenomenon, that Google often blurs military and other “secret” sites to avoid disclosing information about the whereabouts of these sites, which raised speculation about this case.

One Reddit user commented, “My first thought was that it was a censored place. It doesn’t make sense for the natural formation to turn black on such a small, shallow atoll.”

A number of Reddit users explained that the “black hole” was actually Vostok Island, an allegedly uninhabited atoll about 2,280 km east of Sydney, Australia.
