LONDON (Reuters) – The London Fire Brigade said on Tuesday it had brought under control a fire that broke out in Westminster tube station in central Britain, and that the cause of the smoke that set off the alarm would be investigated.

London – Sputnik. The fire department said in a statement that the brigade was called at 11:29 and the incident was brought under control by 12:49 (local time) and firefighting teams from Lambeth, Euston, Old Kent Road and Soho attended the scene.

Six fire engines and about 40 firefighters were called in after thick smoke erupted from an electrical room in the basement of the metro station located near Parliament, the Prime Minister’s official residence in 10 Downing Street, and other government buildings.

The London fire brigade added that about 100 passengers left the station before the firefighters arrived, following the accident, and did not indicate any injuries or material losses.
