A fugitive has been sentenced to death for 40 years… How did the Chinese police arrest him after these years

The Chinese police have not lost hope of arresting a prisoner who escaped from the death penalty, despite the passage of 40 years since his escape.

Prisoner Kao was in his prime when he was sentenced to death for being convicted of theft in 1982, in his early thirties, and then the sentence was reduced from execution to a prison sentence only.
One day, he told the guards in the prison that he wanted to go out to buy supplies necessary to repair the prison’s movie projector, and after he had the opportunity, he fled towards Tibet and changed his name, and was on the run for 4 decades, according to the British Telegraph newspaper.

The officers say they encountered difficulties, due to the lack of basic information about him, but they did not lose hope and kept narrowing their search until they found him in a temporary shelter in Baochang Town, Nantong City.

In a statement after his arrest, he said, “All these years, my heart was very troubled. I used to shake every time I saw a police car, or a policeman.”

He continued, “I shouldn’t have broken the law then and run away from home for many years. I lost my family, friends and everything in the past. Now, I am determined to face reality with courage, and accept legal penalties.”
