The Confederation of African Football (CAF) decided to postpone the match between Guinea Conakry and Morocco in the second round of the World Cup qualifiers (Qatar 2020), against the background of the events that took place today in the Guinean capital.

In a joint statement, CAF and FIFA said, “To ensure the safety and security of all players and protect all match officials, FIFA and CAF decided to postpone the Guinea-Morocco 2022 World Cup qualifying match, which was scheduled to be hosted in Conakry, Guinea. On Monday, September 6,” stressing that the new date for the match will be determined at a later time.

And local media reported, earlier today, that the President of Guinea, Alpha Conde, was arrested by rebels who carried out a military coup, stressing that the Special Forces and the military announced the suspension of the constitution and the closure of land and air borders, in addition to the arrest of the Guinean president.

The Guinean Ministry of Defense announced, this evening, Sunday, that it had “confronted an armed attack by rebels on the presidential palace and restored security and calm,” noting that they had spread fear in the hearts of citizens. The loyalists and the republicans repelled an armed attack launched by the rebels this morning,” referring to “the continuation of security operations to restore order and peace.” The statement added, “The President of the Republic, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Alpha Conde, and the government call on the population to remain calm and call on them to be vigilant throughout the duration of the military operations.”
