Russian presidential spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, indicated that Ukraine’s accession to NATO poses a danger to Russia, because the alliance’s infrastructure will approach its borders.

Moscow-Sputnik. In an interview with the Russian newspaper “Izvestia”, Peskov said in response to a question whether Ukraine’s accession to NATO poses a threat to Russia: “Maybe, yes. Of course, we are closely watching the results of this visit [the visit of the Ukrainian president to Washington] and when I say: maybe yes. [Accession is dangerous], I mean, first of all, the statements made about the possibility of Ukraine’s membership in NATO, and Zelensky insists on Ukraine’s desire to join NATO, which perhaps half of Ukraine’s population does not support, according to opinion polls.”

He added that this would bring the NATO infrastructure closer to the Russian borders.

Opinion polls showed that about half of Ukraine’s population does not support the country’s leadership’s desire to join NATO, Peskov said.

“Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky still insists on Ukraine’s desire to join NATO, which, by the way, may not have the support of at least half of Ukraine’s population, according to opinion polls,” Peskov said.
