A recently published study found that there are benefits to being overweight, and that this increase may even be one of the chances of surviving some fatal diseases.
According to a study conducted by scientists from the Swedish University of Gothenburg, being overweight can increase the chances of surviving some fatal diseases.
Scientists conducted the study on 2196 people, and noted that people who had a large waist circumference were less likely to die from severe bacterial infections, according to the British newspaper, The Sun.
The study indicated that 26% of patients with severe bacterial infections who were of normal weight died within a year, compared to 17% for groups with a higher body mass index.
Study author Dr. Aisa Aliso said: “In most diseases, obesity and being overweight are dangerous, which applies to several types of cancer and cardiovascular diseases, and in particular Covid-19, where high body mass index is associated with higher mortality rates. It’s different with severe bacterial infections.”
While Gunnar Jacobson, co-author of the study, said that “more trials are needed to shed light on how body weight affects the body’s defenses against infection so that treatment can be customized.”
