A mistake in minting a coin raises its selling price

68

A rare 50 pence coin, which was mistakenly minted in 2011, has sold for hundreds of pounds on eBay, well above its face value.

According to the British newspaper, “The Sun”, the coin was sold for 360 pounds after 47 attempts to buy it from eight users who competed for the piece that was sold at auction, which saw a change in the type of coins sought by coin hunters.

The coin was among 29 designs for the 2012 Olympic Games, issued in 2011 with the image of a swimmer appearing on one side of it.

The correct version of the coin has fewer lines in the design, which means that the swimmer’s face appears more.
