One of the oldest trees in the world… a 2500-year-old olive tree burned in Greece

A 2,500-year-old olive tree on the Greek island of Evia has been completely burnt by forest fires raging there.

The Greek website “Greek Reporter” reported that forest fires destroyed the tree, which is one of the oldest olive trees in the world.

The historical tree, located in the olive grove of Rovia, was a symbol of the landscape mentioned by the ancient geographer and philosopher Strabo in his writings.
The tree was so large, with a very wide trunk, that it could accommodate ten people in diameter, and so fertile with olives that it fell victim to the wildfires.

It is noteworthy that the fires broke out last week during the worst heat wave in Greece in 30 years.

A fire broke out in the Peloponnese, near ancient Olympia, the site of the first Olympic Games, and spread to Gortinea, while the fire raged late on Tuesday evening, prompting the authorities to evacuate 20 villages.

Approximately 580 Greek firefighters are fighting the fires in Gortinea with the help of colleagues from France, Britain, Germany and the Czech Republic.

As fires burn relentlessly in many parts of the country, the largest front was in Evia, Greece’s second largest island, off the mainland to the east of Athens.

The authorities said that the firefighting planes encountered difficulties in operating, due to the large plumes of smoke that covered the area.
