Dr. Irina Berzhnaya, gastroenterologist, Russian nutrition expert, announced that a healthy person can eat 400-500 grams of red meat per week without any harm.
The expert indicated, in an interview with Radio “Sputnik”, that some experts advise to completely abandon eating red meat. What is the benefit of this meat and what is the harm?
According to her, beef and lamb can be called “red”. This meat is rich in beneficial substances, such as iron, selenium, B vitamins and polyunsaturated essential fatty acids, which are necessary to support the immune system, central nervous system and muscles.
And she adds, for example, the body’s daily need for iron is found in a small piece of red meat, and to get this amount of iron from plant foods, you must eat three kilograms of apples per day, or a kilogram of buckwheat.
Red meat is more essential for athletes and those who are physically active.
“If a person is an athlete, or does intense physical activity, they should eat more red meat than a person whose lifestyle is sedentary. Because muscles need a large amount of amino acids,” she says.
According to the expert, a healthy person should eat 400-500 grams of red meat per week. As for people who are overweight, high cholesterol, and cardiovascular disease, they should avoid eating fatty red meat.
“We limit the intake of certain types of meat because they contain a large amount of cholesterol and non-essential fatty amino acids,” she says. “The trans fats in them are easily processed by the body, and they easily accumulate in the form of cholesterol plaques.”
