Yemenis accuse the Saudi series “Rashash” of insulting the women of their country… What is its story?

A Saudi series, currently broadcasting on “Shahid VIP”, sparked a state of anger on social media, after one of its episodes mentioned a phrase that, according to many, represented “an insult to the women of Yemen.”

The series “Rashash”, produced by MBC Studios, began on the second of last July, and is considered the largest Saudi drama on a digital platform.

The 8-episode series deals with the story of the most dangerous criminal in Saudi Arabia, called the “Al-Otaibi machine gun”, who was blocking roads and looting vehicles on the roads of the Kingdom during the eighties of the last century.

During the presentation of one of his recent episodes, the hero of the series, played by the Saudi actor, Yaqoub Al-Farhan, said, “We preserve the dirhams for Yemen, we need the harem and the drugs,” what Saudis and Yemenis considered an insult to the women of Yemen that required an apology from MBC and the actor.

Tweeters launched a hashtag (marker) “#Rashash_Abusive_Women_Yemen”, in which they expressed their strong anger at the management of the Saudi channel for what was mentioned in the series.

Yemeni journalist Mujahid Al-Salali wrote: “We thank all the Saudi brothers who denounced and condemned the abuse of the series “Rashesh” for Yemeni women. The show is the same.”

He added, “But deleting the clips is not enough. We demand an official apology broadcast on MBC channels to Yemenis for this abuse and all the other abuses mentioned in the series, as well as the previous offenses.”

Many criticisms extended to MBC, and the irony was that most of them were from Saudis, one of whom wrote: “The people of Yemen are our people, and the channel does not represent us, and most of my friends are from the people of Yemen, whom we are proud and honored.”

The Yemenis demanded that the series be stopped as a first step, and then an official apology from all the participants in it.

While others considered that showing the series in the first place was a mistake, as the man, the “machine gun Al-Otaibi”, was punished, and his family and tribe should be respected, and his story should not be raised again.

It is noteworthy that a machine gun and his gang were active in the desert region of Wadi Al-Dawasir and Al-Sulaisel, where they were working to cut off the road and move between the southern region of the Kingdom and Yemen, and he was arrested and executed in 1989, according to Al-Arabiya channel.
