Jakarta .. Two tigers of an endangered species infected with Corona

Officials in Jakarta said that tests confirmed that two endangered Sumatran tigers at a zoo in Jakarta had been infected with the Corona virus, but they are expected to recover.

Susie Marsiwati, head of the Urban Parks and Forestry Agency in Jakarta, said that the tigers Tino and Harry, 9 and 12, are receiving treatment and are being closely monitored by veterinarians at Ragunan Zoo.

Tino began showing symptoms, including sneezing, difficulty breathing, and decreased appetite on July 9. Two days later, Harry started having the same problems.

Marcitawati said that samples taken from the two piperines on July 14 tested positive for the coronavirus.

The two rare piperines are believed to be the first known case of the virus in animals in Indonesia.

“The two tigers have been receiving medication, including antibiotics and vitamins, since they started showing symptoms… After 12 days of treatment, their condition has started to improve and they are expected to recover,” Marcitawati added.

And she continued in a statement that the zoo was still trying to track how the two tigers were infected, as the zoo was closed in light of movement restrictions in the city when symptoms began to appear on them.

It is noteworthy that the Sumatran tiger is the only remaining tiger subspecies in Indonesia, and only about 600 tigers remain. The other two species have become extinct – the Javan tiger and the Bali tiger.
