Best supplements for eye health

61

Myopia is a very common eye condition in which distant objects appear blurry and nearby objects are clearly visible.

Dr Chris Steele, on ITV’s This Morning program, warned that “myopia is caused by less time spent outdoors as a child.”

With screen time constantly increasing, the need to take care of your eye health is vital. Although there is no “clear evidence” that vitamins can help with eye health, supplement combinations have proven to be the most successful.

Dr. Chris Steele explained that supplements containing lutein and zeaxanthin can improve macular health. The macula is the central and most sensitive area of the so-called retina. It is responsible for collecting highly detailed images in the center of the visual field and sending them along the optic nerve to the brain.

Lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoids, the pigments produced by plants that give fruits and vegetables their yellow to red color.

According to the AllAboutVision Eye Health Center, lutein, zeaxanthin and the macula are thought to block blue light from reaching essential retinal structures. This reduces the risk of light-induced oxidative damage, which can lead to age-related macular degeneration.

Furthermore, studies published in the American Journal of Epidemiology and Ophthalmology and Archives of Ophthalmology show that higher levels of lutein and zeaxanthin in the diet are associated with a lower incidence of myopia.

And two studies published in Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science also found that eyes with higher levels of macular pigments are less likely to develop or develop macular degeneration.
