It was reported that the foreign ministers of the European Union, at a meeting held in Luxembourg on Monday, reached an agreement on imposing economic sanctions against Belarus.

News agencies quoted their sources as saying, “The foreign ministers have reached an agreement on imposing economic sanctions on Belarus. This decision aims to limit the sources of financial income for the regime of Alexander Lukashenko.” The sources indicated that the sanctions decision was taken unanimously.
Earlier, Josep Borrell, head of EU diplomacy, said that EU foreign ministers would discuss in Luxembourg the imposition of sectoral economic sanctions against Belarus, to be presented at the EU summit on June 24-25.

The leaders of the European Union will take a political decision to impose sanctions against certain sectors of the Belarusian economy, and after the European summit, the package of economic sanctions will be technicalized and made public. The sanctions are expected to cover the potash and oil refining industries, as well as the banking sector in Belarus.
