A “smart watch” helps detect a resounding crime in Greece

Greek police said that they were able to discover the details of a brutal murder of a young girl some time ago, and sparked vociferous reactions among the country’s residents recently.

Police said they made a lot of use of the “smart watch” data of the victim and her husband.

In the details, Babis Anagnostopoulos reported that his 20-year-old wife, Caroline Crouch, was killed during a robbery. The man alleged that criminals broke into their house on the outskirts of Athens, tied him and his wife with ropes and began looking for money, after which the thieves strangled Caroline, took valuables and fled.

Police announced a reward of 300,000 euros for anyone who provides information on the perpetrators. A Georgian citizen was arrested on suspicion of committing a crime, but later it was found that he had nothing to do with what happened.

During the technical analysis, the experts found a discrepancy between the husband’s statement and the data obtained from the smartwatches used by the couple. For example, the moment the husband claimed that his wife was dead, the smartwatch recorded her heartbeat. The husband’s smart watch indicated that he was moving inside the house when he claimed that he was tied with ropes.

The suspect was arrested immediately after the memorial service. During an eight-hour interrogation, the 33-year-old husband admitted that he had often quarreled with his wife in the recent period, which made the idea of killing her and inventing the crime of theft brewing in his head.
